Thousands celebrate Britain’s Olympians and Paralympians as they parade through London. . Report by Lindsay Brown.

Sportstars including Sir Chris Hoy, Rower Kath Grainger, Jessica Ennis, Hannah Cockcroft and Jonnie Peacock proudly wore their medals as they waved to fans from open-top floats which wound their way through streets full of fans.

Despite the Paralympics coming to a close with a rousing ceremony on Sunday night, the celebrations continued with a carnival-like atmosphere in the city.

Ahead of the parade setting off, Sir Chris said: “This isn’t really for us this is for them because they’ve made the Games.

“They’ve made the atmosphere, they’ve supported the athletes, not just in the venues, but through the streets, and the pubs, the public venues, it’s been incredible.

“So it’s our chance to give them a wave and a thank you for all the support they’ve given us.”

Olympic gold medallist in double sculls rowing Grainger said: “We never really knew how many people would turn up, maybe we thought people would have gone back to work or been fatigued by the last month. But my word, we could never have expected this.”

Around 800 athletes travelled on 21 floats, grouped in alphabetical order by their sport, departed from Mansion House in the City just after 1.30pm following a fanfare of trumpets.

The crowds, dozens deep in places, were a sea of red, white and blue as fans waved Union flags at the passing floats. Many also held up home-made banners, with some donning patriotic fancy dress for the occasion.

Mönchengladbach / Rheydt @ cityspotlight de

Name and origins
The original name of the city was Gladbach, which is even today often applied to the town. To distinguish the town from another town of the same name (the present Bergisch Gladbach) it took the name München-Gladbach in 1888. This spelling could mislead people to think that Gladbach was a borough of Munich (München in German), and consequently the name was changed to Mönchen Gladbach in 1950 and Mönchengladbach in 1960.

The origin of the town was an abbey founded in 974. It was named after the Gladbach, a narrow brook, that mostly runs subterraneously today. The abbey and adjoining villages became a town in the 14th century. The town of Rheydt is located nearby and is incorporated into Mönchengladbach today.

Formerly known as Münchengladbach, is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located west of the Rhine half way between Düsseldorf and the Dutch border.

Mönchengladbach is home of the football club Borussia Mönchengladbach, Formula One race car drivers Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, author/cartoonist Walter Moers, cabaret artist Volker Pispers, and the philosopher Hans Jonas

Gymnast UK Gymnastics documentary

I really enjoy her gymnastics :) I hope many gymnasts learn from watching this docu that even if you are not in the spotlight doesn’t mean you are out of it. Hard work and sticking in there gives result in the end. I had a similar story myself back in ballet school where I always was 2nd or 3rd cast for things until one day I needed to jump in with two hours notice in a show. I made the most of that opportunity. Can’t wait for this summer now!!! Go Team GB! (and I’m a swede) :)

This is one of the best documentaries on sports I have ever seen.
