The High Price of Materialism

Since our schools rarely teach critical thinking, we let our TVs do the thinking for us. It tells us what to do, what cars to buy, where to go on vacation, what to eat, what movies to watch, what clothes to wear, how to talk, look, act… because apparently we have forgotten, or never knew how to think for ourselves. We need to pick up books, read and think, or lose the one ability that will save us. The ability to THINK.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don’t need. We’re the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War’s a spiritual war… our Great Depression is our lives. We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won’t. And we’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.

Epic win for Djokovic

Novak Djokovic comments after winning his second-straight Australian Open. (03:03) January 29, 2012

Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic is eyeing a clean sweep of Grand Slam titles with the French Open scheduled to take place after five months.

“The way I’m playing right now, I think I have a game that is good enough to win titles on all surfaces,” The Telegraph quoted Djovokic, as saying at a photocall at Melbourne’s Carlton Gardens.

“I have proven that, even last year, winning back-to-back Madrid and Rome [on clay] ” it was an incredible effort and gives me a lot of confidence and self-belief coming to the clay courts now,” he added.

Djokovic’s comments came after he routed Spanish ace Rafael Nadal 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 in the longest Australian Open final to clinch his fifth Grand Slam title.

The bookmakers have quoted Djokovic at just 10-1 to win all four Grand Slams in 2012 — an achievement that would be all the more extraordinary given that this is an Olympic year.

Djovokic said he is capable of achieving the rare feat of a clean sweep.

“It is the ultimate challenge to win all four Grand Slams. One player has done it [Rod Laver in 1962 and 1969], so it is possible. Obviously the times are different. Tennis nowadays is much more competitive and much more physical and that makes that challenge more difficult to achieve,” he said.

“But everything is possible. I need to go slowly and really take one tournament at a time but Grand Slams are my biggest priority — including the Olympics” and I will try to aim my form for those tournaments,” he added.

Hi All!  This is Tom taking over for Charlie for a few days.  He is on vacation again – Imagine That!!  Our plan is to greatly increase the number of guest photographers that we highlight here on www.PhotoBotos.com starting in the beginning of February due to a huge amount of amazing submissions (please keep sending them – we want more!).  We have a guest photographer scheduled for January 25th but besides that we were only going to showcase Charlie’s photos until the big February kickoff.

CHANGE OF PLANS!

I received an email from Colin Gallagher two days ago and felt that it was a must to share it.  His website is http://colintgallagher.com and there is a good mix of images there.  The reason that the email was so appealing to me was the story behind the shot.  It sounds like…

The Jackson family is an African American family of musicians who originated in Gary, Indiana and later relocated to Encino, California. Performing as members of The Jackson 5 and as solo artists, the children of Joseph Walter and Katherine Esther Jackson influenced and shaped the sound of popular music. As a group, the eldest sons Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, set the family on a path of musical success that spread among siblings Rebbie, La Toya, Randy, and Janet. The acclaim of The Jackson 5 led the group to become known as the “First Family of Soul”; the continued success of Michael and Janet’s careers as solo artists led the Jacksons to become known as the “Royal Family of Pop“. Eight of the nine Jackson siblings (excluding La Toya) have gold records to their credits.

Members of the Jackson family have been the subject of heavily publicized controversies and legal imbroglios, most notably allegations of child abuse against Michael in 1993, his criminal trial in 2005, and Janet’s controversial Super Bowl halftime performance in 2004. Some Jackson siblings have, at various times, publicly criticized one another and alleged abuse at the hands of their father.[4][5] In spite of these circumstances and other troubles, the Jacksons have continued to be praised for shaping the world of entertainment with some of the siblings’ own children taking the spotlight in various careers. In recent years, certain members of the family have been honored for their work: in 1997 The Jackson 5 were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Michael would follow the group to the hall in 2001. In 2002, Joseph was acknowledged as “the best musical manager of all time” by the Hall in Cleveland. The Jacksons, Michael and Janet all received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1980, 1984 and 1990 respectively.

Michael died on June 25, 2009, just weeks before he was to begin a series of 50 comeback concerts.

RIP Michael. This vid is also dedicated to his 3 children Prince, Paris and Blanket

Will You Still Be Here (Wirst du noch da sein)

Michelle – Wirst du noch da sein
Will you still be there

Irgendwo im Schatten der Sonne
Sah ich dich am Rande der Zeit
Du und ich für immer und ewig
Sag, dass alles so bleibt

Somewhere in the shadows of the sun
I saw you at the edge of time.
You and me forever and ever
Say that everything remains

Irgendwann verglühen die Sterne
Gilt dein Wort auch dann noch für dich?
Wartest du (dann) am Ende der Straße?
Führst du mich dann ans Licht?

At some point stars burn out
Will your word still apply?
Are you going to wait at the end of the street?
Will you lead me into the light?

Will you still be there when everyone else leaves?
Will you see me with your eyes?
(Will) you hold me tight until the storm abates?
Even when the wind turns?
(Will) you drink with me out of the same glass?
Even if you would like something else?
(Even) if you still love me this way today
There is no answer

Was tust du wenn Freunde dir sagen:
„Diese Frau, die passt nicht zu dir“
Ist für dich die Party zu Ende
Oder bleibst du bei mir?

What do you do when friends tell you:
“This woman doesn’t fit you”
Is the party over for you?
Or will you stay with me?

Will you still be there when everyone else leaves?
Will you see me with your eyes?
(Will) you hold me tight until the storm abates?

2011: A Decade
By Alicia Keys

Looking back 10 years later is such a mind trip. I feel proud of everything that has been accomplished. I look back through all of the pictures, songs, videos and performances and there’s a big smile on my face because I can’t even believe that all of this has happened. In so many ways, I feel like I’m just getting started. I mean, I’m really just now about to begin to do what I know will be my best work.

I see so much growth and I see how I’ve been able to have so many priceless experiences. I feel grateful and blessed to have been able to do what I love in music for 10 years. And, I plan to do it for 50 million more! Celebrating these 10 years has ignited a fire in me to do better and to continue to be involved in things that really move people. I have learned, I have transitioned, and I have grown. I couldn’t have asked for a better decade to look back on!

I’m also thrilled for what the future holds as I continue to find happiness. I believe happiness is the most important thing in the universe.

Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)

The video above discusses the Senate version of the House’s Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). In the Senate the bill is called the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). SOPA has gotten more attention than PIPA because it was moving faster in the legislative process. But PIPA is just as dangerous, and now it is moving faster.
PIPA would give the government new powers to block Americans’ access websites that corporations don’t like. The bill lets corporations and the US government censor entire websites and cut sites off from advertising, payments and donations.
This legislation will stifle free speech and innovation, and even threaten popular web services like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook.
The bill is scheduled for a test vote in the Senate on Jan. 24th: We need to act now to let our lawmakers know just how terrible it is. Will you fill out the form above to ask your lawmakers to oppose the legislation and support a filibuster?
